How to prepare

For an initial consultation

No particular preparation. You can come alone and drive away afterwards. Bring your old optical prescriptions if you have them. Allow about 45 minutes.

For a complete preoperative exam

Contact lenses: stop soft contact lenses at least 48 hours before. For rigid lenses, stop at least one week before.

Make-up: avoid mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow on the day of the exam.

Accompanying person: the complete exam includes pupil dilation. Driving is impossible for two to three hours afterwards. Plan for someone to accompany you or use public transport.

Time: allow a full hour.

On the day of the procedure

The procedure takes place as outpatient surgery: you go home the same day. Someone to accompany you is mandatory, whichever technique is used.

The initial consultation is by appointment

The first consultation to assess whether refractive surgery is an option for you is by appointment, without commitment. You leave with a first answer on your profile.

If a complete exam is needed, it will be organised at a dedicated consultation, with a dedicated appointment.

ReimbursementRefractive surgery (laser, ICL) is not reimbursed by health insurance in Belgium. Cataract surgery is reimbursed. Premium implants involve a non-reimbursed supplement. Exact prices are communicated during the exam.

What you leave with

After the initial consultation

An initial consultation lasts about 45 minutes. You leave with a clear answer on your eligibility for refractive surgery, an explanation of the techniques suited to your profile (Femto-LASIK, PRK, ICL or PRELEX) and a first estimate of the cost of the procedure.

If your profile is eligible, a complete preoperative exam is scheduled. This thorough exam (corneal topography, pachymetry, aberrometry, cycloplegia, fundus examination) takes about an hour. The usual delay between the initial consultation and the preoperative exam is one to two weeks.

If your profile is not eligible, you leave with a precise explanation of the reasons and, where applicable, alternatives to explore.

Practical questions

Before booking an appointment

The initial consultation is without commitment. It requires no particular preparation: you can come alone and drive away afterwards.

For the complete preoperative exam: stop soft contact lenses 48 hours before (rigid lenses: one week), no make-up around the eyes, and arrange for someone to accompany you as pupil dilation makes driving impossible for two to three hours.

Refractive surgery (Femto-LASIK, PRK, ICL) is not reimbursed by INAMI in Belgium. Some private insurances partially contribute. Cataract surgery, however, is reimbursed. A detailed estimate will be provided during the preoperative exam.

Postoperative follow-up includes several check-ups: the next day, at one week, at one month, then at three months. These appointments are essential to check healing and visual stability.
